When one dies, if he/she has done enough good works goes to the Paradise, The Deity's Abode. In that paradise there is no sufferings, all the dreams are fulfilled, wishes are granted.

To sustain the sanity of the Paradise(Swarg). God’s have to perform Yagnas (rituals), so that the demons living under the earth can be defeated.

 Planet Jupiter(Brihaspati) Performs this ritual. and for making it successful, the presence of her wife Tara(Star) is required.

But in one bad day Tara the wife of Jupiter eloped with the moon(Chandra). Tara had actually tired of her Husband, who had more interest in performing rituals than her. who did not know love making. She had fallen in love with the romantic Moon.

Jupiter asked Indra (The king of Gods) to bring back his wife, so that the rituals could be performed successfully.

The Gods were divided in their Views, should they force Tara (who was living happily with her lover moon) to come back to her husband who was just Using her for the performance of the rituals.  After much discussion, it was decided that the Rituals were more important than the happiness of Tara. Without the rituals There would be complete darkness over the earth, the demons Could win and rule the earth. So Tara was ordered to return to Brihaspati(Jupiter).

Tara returned reluctantly, when she came, she was bearing a child in her womb. Moon and Brihaspati asked Tara about the father of the child. Tara was in a dilemma to answer the question. The child in the womb also asked Tara about its father, the gods were surprised. They declared that the child would be named Budha (planet mercury). In Indian languages Budha means Knowledge, the intellect part of our brain which enable to distinguish falsehood.

Compelled by her child Tara declared that It was the Child of Moon. Furious Jupiter Lost control and cursed her child that the child would be born as a neutral gender, neither male nor female.

The gods were horrified by this cruel curse. Indra intervened and declared that the child would be henceforth known as Jupiter's son. and would live with him. Not with The one who was his biological father. It does not matter who sows the seed, what matters more is the one who owns the field. as Tara had married Jupiter lawfully so Jupiter would be the master and would take care of Tara and her child.

After birth Mercury became a shape shifting Liminal Being, neither Boy nor Girl. who was raised in the house of Brihaspati.

Since that day Law took over natural phenomena in heaven and earth and Fatherhood was defined by marriage.

In Mahabharata same thing Prevailed when Arjun was called as the child of Pandu, even though He is not the Biological father of Arjun.

note-

In few ancient Indian art mercury has shown as riding creature(Yali), who has the head of an elephant but a body of the Lion, reminding a liminal being.
